The issue of marriage inequality is not a new problem and is an issue of injustice. According to Carina Kolodny from The Huffington Post, “You're not really fearful for the welfare of children or the "sanctity" of marriage -- you are afraid of a world that sees men and women equally. No more and no less”. This suggests that many people are afraid of changing for the greater good. This applies to the issue of marriage inequality by states not allowing people of the same sex to marry one another. For example, all but one of the counties in the state of Alabama have gone from issuing marriage licenses to not issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This illustrates how many states do not allow the freedom to marry.
There are few states that do not allow marriage for same sex couples. According to CNN.com, there are thirteen states that have a ban on marriage equality. In the state of Texas, a group of Republicans held a celebration in honor of the ten year marriage ban. This suggests that there are many people that are not in favor of allowing people to have the freedom of marriage. This applies to the issue of many people not being able to marry the ones they love. For example, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said in an radio interview that “court rulings upholding marriage equality are a real danger to our liberty,”. This illustrates how some government officials believe that marriage equality hurts the freedom of others. People from this view believe how some government officials do not want people that are in same-sex relationship to have the right to marry their partner.
The support for gay marriage is favorable among the American people. According to “Support for gay marriage hits new high” (by MSNBC website): “...59% of Americans said that they favor same-sex marriages while just 33% said they oppose them.” This is suggesting that there are many people who now support same-sex marriage. This applies to the issue of marriage equality by stating how the support for marriage equality has increased from 30% to 59% and those who oppose it has decreased 62% to 33% in the past decade. For example, U.S. News states “The survey also found a double-digit increase in support over the past two years among 50 to 64 year olds, half of whom now favor marriage rights for gay couples, and among 18 to 34 year olds, more than 7 in 10 of whom support it.” This illustrate how this is a turning point for future generations of people in the LGBT community.
Among the political party, there has been growing support for marriage equality. According to Freedom to Marry “Polling Tracks Growing and Increasingly Diverse Support for the Freedom to Marry,” both Democrats and Republicans support for marriage equality has significantly increased from 2010. This suggest that the support for marriage equality is gradually increasing. This applies to the issue of marriage equality by stating how the support for marriage equality is progressing in the right direction. For example, the article “Republican Group Come Out In Support Of Gay Marriage” states “It is precisely because marriage is so important in producing and protecting strong and stable family structures that (we) do not agree that the government can rationally promote the goal of strengthening families by denying civil marriage to same-sex couples” This illustrates how people that are know to be conservative are being open minded and allowing change to be made.
To think globally and act locally means to make a difference worldwide while working together in or as a community. Making a lemonade stand to raise money for illnesses is a way to think globally, and act locally. Moreover, there countless numbers of organizations that are taking action to help fight for the basic right every person deserves. For example, Marriage Equality USA, Human Rights Campaign, Freedom to Marry are all organization that help fight for marriage equality across the United States. Currently there 37 states (72% of all states) that have marriage equality right for same-sex couples. There are many supporters who support same-sex marriage among the world from Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton, to Lady Gaga, American singer and songwriter. On April 28th there will be four same-sex cases that will be taken to the United States Supreme Court. This will allow the four cases to be heard before the U.S. Supreme Court to argue for same-sex marriages. The expected ruling from the U.S Supreme Court will be in June of 2015. “This follows the Court’s denial of review in all five cases where federal appellate courts had ruled in favor of the freedom to marry, opening the door for same-sex marriages to take effect in the 11 non-marriage states within those circuits.” These three organization show support for marriage equality among the entire United States.
There are many ways people can help support the fight for marriage equality. People can sign a petition, or people can raise money to donate to fundraisers that support same-sex marriages. In Hazel Park, Michigan, there are two nurses that are against the same-sex marriage ban that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled toward the state of Michigan. “Pizza Lovers for Marriage Equality” is the name of the campaign that was initiated by Lori Pimlott of Royal Oak, Michigan. She hopes to raise $10,000 dollars to help reduce the cost of the case that was brought upon the U.S. Supreme Court in 2004. “If a(n) anti gay marriage pizzeria in Indiana can make almost a million dollars ... trying to fool us into thinking the majority of US citizens are against gay marriage let's show the country that the majority of this country DOES support Marriage Equality” says Lori on her website in response to the Indiana pizzeria that wouldn’t cater to gay marriages Unfortunately there are people that don’t believe that there should be marriage equality. The National Organization for Marriage is an organization that believe that marriage only consist of a man and a woman. Their belief is “We work to defend marriage and the faith communities that sustain it at the local, state, and national levels. We do this by working with legislators, by informing voters when they head to the ballot box, and by giving marriage a voice in courts of law as well as in the court of public opinion.” This shows that people are not open to the issue of everyone being able to marry the person they love.
As stated before there 34 state that allow same-sex couples to get married, thus leaving only 26 states that do not allow same-sex marriages. There are similar issues that people of the LGBT community face, for example in 34 states there are many rights and protection that are denied. They are not able to have adoption rights, parenting rights, automatic inheritance, employment equality, and the right to fair trial amongst many other rights that they are denied. This is an issue of injustice because these rights should not be taken away because someone is gay or lesbian.
