Before attending Social Justice High School, I haven’t heard of the word social justice. I had no knowledge of what the word meant. But now that I am a Senior, I have heard the word “social justice” many times. To me the definition of the word Social Justice is when people are struggling and fighting for the rights and freedom that every human beings deserves. The opposite of social justice is where people are treated better, and receive more benefits than other people based on their races, religion, or sexual orientation.
Many people often face different disincentive while trying to achieve social justice. I believe that many times, people don’t achieve social justice because they are afraid of change or at times people believe that they are changing things positively in different aspects of the world, but are really not. Some government officials are not in favor of raising the minimum wage to $10. Numberless amount of people won’t have to live under the poverty line and have a chance to enjoy life without worrying if they will be able to provide the essential of life to their family. For example, about 60% of people living in Chicago are living at or under the poverty line. Marriage equality, is another obstacle that the people in the LGBT community of America face. Why aren’t certain people able to marry the ones they love because they’re not heterosexual?
. Often times, there are many bumps on the road to successfully achieve social justice. To overcome the struggle, people tend to speak out, amongst other forms of protest. In August of 2012, the student of Social Justice High School had a sit-in to obtain the AP classes that were wrongfully stolen from the students and to bring back the two of the many influential teacher that Social Justice High School has had that were unjustifiably terminated from their positions. In September of 2012, the Chicago’s Teachers Union had a march in downtown Chicago to protest and to negotiate the lengths of school days; and to discuss how many teachers’ jobs were at stake. In late 2013 and the beginning of 2014, the Russian government wouldn’t allow athletes participate in the Olympic winter games because some were part of the LGBT community. Those who are committed to social justice, put those who are silenced, those who are oppressed, and those are inferior, at an advantage because we are not only the voice for ourselves, but for everyone. Having the courage to stand up for what is right will leave future generation, to not only fulfill the shoes of those speak out, but to also exceed and go farther than any of us today.
What I will do right now is to try to partake in any movement that is pro-human rights for all. I will give it my all to make sure that no one is take advantage of or no is being hurt because of who they are and who they love. My fire is marriage equality for the LGBT community. Whenever I see or hear that someone is being attacked for being in the LGBT community, it makes me feel like one of my own brother or sister is being attacked. Why should anyone feel so remorseful about who they love and decide to take their own life? In the future I want to help anybody that has been hurt whether they are in the LGBT community or not.
