What is Marriage Equality?
Joseph's Introduction:
Same-sex marriage (also known as gay marriage) is marriage between two people of the same sex. Legal recognition of same-sex marriage or the possibility to perform a same-sex marriage may be referred to as marriage equality or equal marriage, particularly to those who are in favor and support. The concept of “traditional marriage” has changed over time, and the definition of marriage as always being between one man and one woman is historically inaccurate.
I chose to do this topic for my Fire Project because there is still great inequality in this country and it has a direct negative impact on the lives of everyday people just like you and me. I believe that everyone should have the chance to achieve their hopes and dreams, have the same basic fundamental rights and securities under the law, and be able to celebrate their love as equal members in all aspects of society. It is the fire within me that I trust that sexual orientation shouldn't define a person for simply who they are, but rather accepted just like any other form of identity.
As someone who is gay, it took me a long time until I learned the difference of living and surviving. Looking back, I’ve realized that the closet is a suffocating, exhausting and potentially the most fatal place to be in. I want to let you know that love does not matter of what’s in the pants, but instead of what’s in the heart. People should not feel jeopardized for holding the hand of the person they love, because it’s simple, love is love and no one should feel discouraged about that and neither should I. One day, I want to marry my husband, have a family of my own, and to be able to raise my children in a world where it's okay to be who you are and to not feel like you need to hide it to be accepted nor scared of what others may think.
It is my fire. It is the change that I want to see in the world.
I hope to accomplish after doing this project that I educate others on how gay rights is a nonexistent issue, but that the real issue should be why are we still living in a time where people are still denied their basic civil liberties for something beyond their control.

Diego's Introduction:
I never understood what or who was in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. I did not know what those four words meant. I did not know that there were lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transsexual people up until a couple of years ago when I was first introduced to social media. I would see same-sex relationships on TV and in real life, but I never thought anything of it. But now as I’m growing up, I’m noticing that many people in the LGBT community aren't able to have the same access to rights that many other people are able to access. For example, LGBT community members weren’t able to marry their life partners until 1972. Not being able to marry is a form of bullying because they are given the basic right of marriage. They were and still are being bullied for being part of this community. Many people in the LGBT community are not allowed to marry their partner throughout the United States. People who are considered to be part of the LGBT community are someone who is attracted to the person of the same sex. For example, a woman who is romantically, sexually, and/or emotionally attracted to woman is considered a lesbian. The same goes men who are attracted to men. Someone who is bisexual is someone is attracted to both women and men. A person who considers themselves to be transgender or trans is someone who is born male or female, but feels that like they were born the wrong sex.
I never like the fact that the LGBT community has the word community in it, I feel like it makes us secluded from others, like we all have a disease or something. The truth is, we don’t have a disease that’ll make other kids gay or anything, but I guess it’s better than people calling us something really offensive. I think it’s really insensitive when people say that gay is choice, it’s not, I respect their opinion, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think gay is not a choice, I believe that someone discovers that their gay or bisexual. My issue is about marriage equality. Therefore, the remaining states that do not allow marriage equality should change their laws to allow the right to marry, thus it will give the people the chance to marry the person who they love.
