Social Justice is a community which works together and attempts to demonstrate leadership and equality for all. Partnerships that are not the same when it comes to gender, race, sexual orientation or class creating diversity amongst differences. Social Justice is the love that one poses. It is established by fighting for what is right in a respectful manner. This involves also letting your voice be heard no matter the possible consequences or outcomes that may come with. Despite of this one should not be limited from opportunities and if this is broken then he/she should act upon to regain their right. |
My understanding of Social Justice has changed over the last four years by observing and taking part what is going on in both my school and in my community. Being here at Greater Lawndale High School for Social Justice, I‘ve strived to become more involved in society, which I am thankful for.
I strongly believe that Social Justice can never be achieved if no one takes action and tries to pursue it. With that said, the biggest enemy to justice is not necessarily injustice. The biggest enemy against justice is that it is not being pursued. Something that is not being pursued obviously cannot be achieved. The reason social justice isn’t being pursued is because of the belief that it will never be achieved. Therefore, the biggest enemy of justice is the false belief that justice will never be achieved. As seen in the civil rights movement, there were a lot of people that didn’t really want to march for what was right because they were scared of the outcomes that would come with after. Moreover, I conclude that if one is not pursuing justice, one is pursuing injustice. There is no such thing as pursuing nothing. What you pursue will lead to justice or away from it. Therefore, to believe that justice cannot be achieved is to not pursue justice is to pursue injustice. Yet, this is only one of the many reasons why social justice hasn’t been achieved yet.

My vision for struggle is with open discussion and through communication. Being able to advocate for the lives of others and not just yourself is what breaks boundaries and establishes peace. For example, I saw this myself during my sophomore year on the third day of my second year of high school. The sit-in was what sparked me inside when CPS tried to close our school and played with my education along with my peers.
Lastly, my role in the struggle is to continue being a community activist by giving back countless hours of service in my free time. Within my school, I’m the student representative on the Local School Council. Being the voice for the study body is an honor. I take my job serious as I bring students, parents together with the community for the good of the school. As a Board Member for the Chicago Students Union, I represent all Chicago Public School students city-wide, to promote and protect student rights regarding public education. It is with our mission to engage students in education activism to amplify the voices of students and let them be heard. I love being a part of my school as I do within my community. By doing both will make me believe that I am doing my fair role in the struggle by advocating for not only myself, but for the lives of others. I wish to leave Social Justice High School knowing I did everything in my power to make a positive difference for the best interest of everyone. I believe my fire is to be the voice that everyone has been waiting for. I’m tired of waiting around for things to happen. If I see something that is needed to be done, I’ll be the one who acts upon it. I’ll be the change everyone has been waiting for. In which, once I am in college studying internal affairs, women’s and gender studies, government, education and psychology will give me the confidence to make a difference.
